One World Expands Access to Succession Planning and Board Strengthening Trainings

Over the last two years, we created on-demand trainings on succession planning and board strengthening to add to the portfolio of services we provide to our fiscally sponsored grassroots members. These trainings are designed to help grassroots organizations remain sustainable forces for good in their local communities. Our members have been sharing what they learned from the trainings and how they have improved their operations for lasting success. For example, 5 members have created emergency succession plans for the first time.

As a result, our educational programming has garnered interest from outside our membership network. With the increased interest in our trainings, we wanted to extend our impact to the larger community of international grassroots organizations serving children, families, and marginalized communities. We are proud to announce that we have launched a pilot program extending our educational programs to groups of organizations funded by trusted foundation partners. We have more than doubled the reach of our educational programs with this pilot.

The new organizations we are working with do impactful work in their local communities. One helps young women in Kenya escape child marriage and pursue education. Another helps communities provide healthy food to chronically malnourished children in Rwanda. Yet another provides business skills, access to markets, and funding opportunities to refugees in Malawi. These are just a few examples of the new organizations we are honored to support.

Each new organization will receive access to our online training platform for one year. Our trainings can be accessed by their leaders, teams, and boards of directors to create a deep well of organizational knowledge. They will be able to share our content summaries and use our tools, such as our Emergency Succession Planning Template, to prepare for a sustainable future. We will support their progress and track their results, as we look to scale up our impact without losing the relationship driven approach that has served us so well in the past.

Thank you to our generous donor community, the Segal Family Foundation, the Erik E. & Edith H. Bergstrom Foundation, and the Dorothea Haus Ross Foundation for making this possible.

One World's Resilience Fund Supports Young Refugee’s Development of Repellent Protecting Children from Malaria

One World's Resilience Fund helps organizations continue core programs while responding to emergencies. Wezesha Impact in Uganda used their Resilience Fund grant to provide young entrepreneurs with business training and mentorship, so these young adults could support themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the young refugees who went through Wezesha’s program was recently featured by Uganda's National Newspaper:

"Patient Baraka, together with his sister, fled from DR Congo in 2016, owing to political instability, and settled in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Isingiro District [Uganda]. He was convinced that becoming a refugee had shattered his dream of becoming a doctor. Today, he is not a doctor, but he is contributing to the fight against malaria, one of Uganda's top killer diseases. He manufactures a mosquito repellent under the brand name Botanica."

In addition to protecting children from Malaria, Baraka’s thriving small business employs refugee mothers, creating economic strength for vulnerable families that ripples throughout the community. We are honored to support Wezesha Impact and the young adults they empower through their entrepreneurship program.

You've set us up for an impactful year!

Because of your commitment to lifting children out of poverty, this new year brings One World an extraordinary opportunity to provide holistic, responsive, and tailored support to grassroots organizations. We are grateful to be part of this generous philanthropic community that believes so strongly in the importance of delivering health, education, housing, and economic opportunity to children and families with the greatest need and the least access to resources.

Local Efforts to Mitigate Climate Change

With the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) coming to a close, it's crucial to recognize local efforts to respond to climate change. One World Member Shared Action Africa (Uganda) builds the resilience and adaptive capacities of rural and refugee women to respond to the adverse effects of climate change by promoting climate-smart agriculture and sustainable energy, such as using clean cookstoves.

In addition to reducing her carbon footprint, the clean cookstove provided by Shared Action Africa helped Prossy (pictured), a mother of 5 and food vendor, significantly reduced her monthly energy costs enabling her to take more money home to her family.

KYP Special Announcement

There are special moments and generous gifts that can dramatically increase an organization's ability to improve the lives of children. With fiscal sponsorship from One World Children’s Fund and the support of dedicated Fundraising Champions, Kliptown Youth Program (South Africa) (KYP) just experienced one of these special moments. They received a game-changing gift that will allow them to redevelop their campus, broaden their reach, and become an anchor of hope in the local community.
